La Lega, meaning „the union“, is a popular Italian song from Padova, sung by the women rice farmers of the Po Valley. It is a symbol of the uprising of the agricultural workers against their masters at the end of the 19th century, when numerous workers‘ associations were formed. You can hear the song in Bernardo Bertolucci’s film „1900“, when the peasant women were demonstrating against the expulsion of those who could not pay the debts to the landowners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
